As part of the teaching curriculum of AMMHS, the pupils of year12 (SSS3) recently embarked on a field trip to the naturally endowed vicinity of the KWA-FALLS situated in URBAN, AKAMKPA Local government area of Cross River State. The trip was to practically lecture the students on the topic ECOLOGY.
All students of both arm of year 12 and four staffs aboard two AMMHS buses departed Calabar early for the trip. The students were well prepared to learn and explore the natural and terrestrial environment as they left with all tools necessary for the trip.
Arriving at the location in about 65 minutes, the students were in suitable outfit and equipped with necessary materials to explore the forest. Mr Uket Johnbull. AMMHS Biology teacher briefed the final year students on the aim, topic and objective of the trip. Mr Uket commenced with the first practical on terrestrial habitat as the students were divided into groups of four pupils each. The students carried out transect and random transect where they went into the forest and picked different samples of both plants and animals.
The students now proceeded further to visit and study the sparkling white natural water running from the Cameroun Mountain and falling from a mountain-like igneous rock with a mangrove at the falls bottom. A staff of KWA-FALLS enlightened the students on the characteristics of the natural waterfalls.
The KWA-FALLS staff said that the water runs from the Cameroun Mountain through the KWA-FALLS to the Bakassi River. She added that the volume of water in the falls varies in seasons. The KWA-FALLS staff made known that for the student to get to the bottom of the falls; they have to march through 295 staircases leading directly down to the falls bottom as she added some safety tips.
The year12 students all visited the mangrove at the bottom of the falls in batches. Mr Uket. (AMMHS Biology Teacher) stood at the bottom of the falls and lectured all the batches of student on the mangrove environment and aquatic ecosystem. The students also took some samples of plants and animals found at the falls mangrove as they were securely guided to and fro the bottom of the falls.
